REBIRTH FROM WATER.
VERONA BEYOND THE RIVER
Operational since November 26, 2016, “Rebirth from Water. Verona Beyond the River” is open from Thursday to Friday and access to the churches is guaranteed by our cultural volunteering service.
This itinerary includes six churches located on the left of the river Adige – San Giorgio in Braida, Santo Stefano, Santi Siro and Libera, San Giovanni in Valle, Santa Maria in Organo and the church of San Pietro Martire, the seat of the InfoPoint. Click on each church to discover their history, architectural features and other interesting facts!
In the occasion of urban pilgrimages, two other churches are included in this itinerary, Santa Maria in Betlemme (today known as San Zeno in Monte) and Santa Maria di Nazaret, plus other interesting sites (Fontana del Ferro, city walls, panoramic terraces and gardens): find out when the next pilgrimages are in the Events section and sign up.
The itinerary
The itinerary symbolically starts from the middle of Ponte Pietra where visitors and pilgrims turn their back to the city centre to “cross” the river Adige and plunge into the new and rejuvenating atmosphere of the area outside the bend of the river, enclosed between the Torricelle hills and the city centre.
Our suggestion is to discover the churches following a circular route of about 3.5 kilometres. You can leave from and return to Ponte Pietra, walking through the San Faustino neighbourhood and the old Isolo, enjoying the view of the city from two panoramic terraces – Castel San Pietro and San Zeno in Monte – looking at the Roman Theatre from above and discovering ancient and new water fountains.
It will be an immersion in an environmental context – the Torricelle – that has benefited from the reopening of the funicular and the renovation of the museum, and can count of the sweet music played by the water flowing in the river Adige and the gentle hilly landscapes.
The visit to five churches that in the past were not easily accessible to the public – Santi Siro e Libera, Santa Maria in Organo, San Giovanni in Valle, Santo Stefano and San Giorgio in Braida – is now guaranteed by the Verona Minor Hierusalem volunteers who will welcome visitors, pilgrims and tourists from Thursday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m..
You can find educational material, the credential and the maps at each of our churches, or at the Verona Minor Hierusalem InfoPoint.
