Santi Nazaro e Celso

San Biagio chapel

The first church dedicated to the saints Nazaro and Celso to be erected on this site was probably built at the very dawn of Christianity. When the relics of the two martyrs were transferred to Verona in the 5th century, they were placed in the small oratory. The church we see today was built in 1464, substituting the older Romanesque structure.

Inside this church are housed several paintings by various artists: Farinati, Badile, Brusasorzi, Dai Libri, Montagna.

Most of the frescos and paintings in the church depict scenes from the life of St. Blaise. Started in 1489, the chapel dedicated to the saint, with a dome dominating its central body, is probably the most beautiful corner of the church.

Interesting facts

The early church of Saints Nazaro and Celso can be recognized in the Raterian Iconography, the oldest representation of Verona (10th century); part of the superimposed frescoes of the original oratory are now preserved in the Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle Museum of Frescoes, while the mosaics are still visible on site
