Santi Siro e Libera

Verona’s first Eucharist

Built in the early 10th century and remodelled in the baroque period, the church of Santi Siro e Libera stands in a particularly scenic spot: right on the steps of the Roman Theatre cavea.

An old tradition identified St. Syrus with the child who had given Jesus the five loaves and the two fish for the miracle of the feeding of the multitude (John 6, 1-12). Once an adult, St. Syrus would have been sent by Saint Peter to evangelise the Po Valley and, before settling down in Pavia, he would have stopped in Verona. Here, near the Roman Theatre, the Saint would have celebrated the first Eucharist, in the year 50 AD.

As the site of the first Eucharist, this Veronese church is a constant reminder of Jesus’s Last Supper in Jerusalem.

After centuries of splendour, the church went into decline and was ultimately abandoned in a state of terrible disrepair. We are proud to have contributed to the cleaning up and reopening this historic church to tourists and pilgrims.
